How Much Does a Wedding Photographer Cost in South Wales?
It’s one of the most common questions I hear from couples: “How much should we budget for a wedding photographer?” The honest answer is that it varies enormously — anywhere from a few hundred pounds to several thousand — and the range can feel overwhelming. Here’s a clear, no-waffle breakdown of what you can expect at different price points in South Wales, what influences the cost, and how to make sure you’re getting genuine value for money.
The Typical Price Range in South Wales
Budget end: £0–£500
At this price point you’re typically looking at photographers who are very new to weddings — perhaps building their portfolio or working alongside a day job. That’s not necessarily a problem if your expectations are modest and your budget is tight, but the risk is higher. Consistency, reliability, and experience handling difficult lighting or high-pressure moments are things that come with time. Approach this tier carefully, check references, and always see full galleries before committing.
Mid-range: £500–£1,500
This is the tier where you’ll find the majority of established South Wales wedding photographers. At this level you should expect a solid portfolio, a professional contract, reliable kit with backups, and a photographer who has shot dozens of weddings. For most couples, this range represents excellent value — you’re getting genuine experience without the premium price tag of a specialist.
Premium: £1,500–£3,000+
At the premium end you’re paying for a highly consistent, distinctive style, deep experience across all venue and lighting conditions, and usually a more comprehensive service. Photographers at this level have typically refined their craft over many years and hundreds of weddings. The images will speak for themselves — look at full galleries, not just highlight shots, to understand what you’re paying for.
My own prices
To be transparent: my own packages start from £450 for full-day photography, £650 for wedding film, and £2,250 for a combined photo and film package. You can find full details — including exactly what’s included — on my pricing page.
What Affects the Price?
Several factors influence how much a photographer will charge beyond just their experience level. The inclusion of video or film naturally increases the cost. Travel outside of South Wales will usually attract a supplement. Some photographers work with a second shooter, which adds to the cost but increases coverage significantly. Print products and albums — which I’d always recommend investing in — are sometimes included and sometimes an add-on. Understanding exactly what you’re comparing when you look at different quotes is essential.
What Should Be Included?
A full-day wedding photography package should typically include coverage from preparations through to the first dances — usually eight to ten hours. Your images should be delivered as high-resolution edited files in a private online gallery, with full printing rights included so you can print wherever and however you like. Most professional photographers will also offer some form of timeline planning support, helping you structure your day to allow time for portraits and group shots without feeling rushed.
Is Cheaper Always Worse?
Not at all — but consistency is what you’re really paying for as prices increase. A photographer at £800 who produces beautiful, consistent work across an entire wedding is a far better choice than one charging £2,000 whose portfolio is built on ten outstanding shots from fifty average ones. The key is to ask to see a full wedding gallery — 400 to 600 images — rather than just the carefully curated highlights that appear on Instagram or a website’s homepage. Full galleries tell you everything: how the photographer handles the first dance, group shots, venue interiors, late-night reception light. That’s where the real difference shows.
