Engagement Shoot Locations in South Wales — Our Favourites
An engagement shoot isn’t just about getting some nice photos — although you will get those. It’s really about getting comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. By the time we’ve spent an hour or two together exploring a location you love, the nerves have gone, you’ve stopped thinking about what to do with your hands, and we’ve built up a working relationship that makes a real difference on the big day itself. I always recommend an engagement shoot to every couple I work with — here are some of my favourite locations across South Wales to make the most of it.
1. Porthcawl Beach and Coastline
Porthcawl offers something genuinely special — sweeping sandy beaches, dramatic dunes, and some of the most consistently beautiful coastal light in South Wales. It works year-round: moody autumn skies, golden summer evenings, or crisp winter light all produce something different and wonderful. For couples who want natural, windswept, cinematic images, this is hard to beat. The late evening light in summer here is extraordinary for warm, golden portraits.
2. Brecon Beacons
For adventurous couples, the Brecon Beacons offer open moorland, dramatic skies, and a real sense of scale that you simply can’t replicate in a studio or garden. The golden hour light across the peaks is genuinely stunning, and the sense of being alone in a vast landscape creates images that feel timeless. It’s a longer drive for some, but it’s absolutely worth it — and the images will be unlike anything else.
3. Cardiff Bay and Waterfront
Cardiff Bay is a wonderful option if you’re based in or near Cardiff and want something more urban in feel. The reflections on the water at dusk are beautiful, the architecture gives a contemporary backdrop, and the whole area has a relaxed, cosmopolitan atmosphere that works well for evening shoots. It also offers a huge variety of settings within a small area — from the waterfront to the quieter docks — so we’re never short of options.
4. Ogmore-by-Sea
Ogmore has everything: a ruined castle, a broad sandy beach, the River Ogmore winding through it, and the wild Welsh coastline stretching away on both sides. It’s one of those locations where the setting does half the work for you. I love the variety here — we can move from the castle ruins to the dunes to the water’s edge within minutes. The light in late afternoon is especially lovely.
5. Cosmeston Lakes, Penarth
Cosmeston is an underrated gem for engagement photography. The woodland paths, lakeside reflections, and open meadows give us real variety in a compact, accessible location just outside Cardiff. It’s a brilliant choice for couples who want natural, relaxed images without a long drive — and the lake provides beautiful soft, reflective light at almost any time of day.
6. Rhossili Bay, Gower
Rhossili is, quite simply, one of the most spectacular beaches in Wales — and on a clear evening, it’s one of the most spectacular in the world. The vast expanse of sand, the Worm’s Head in the distance, and the cliff-top views combine to create a backdrop that consistently produces breathtaking images. If you’re willing to make the drive to the Gower, Rhossili will reward you. Sunset here is something I never get tired of photographing.
7. Cowbridge and the Vale of Glamorgan Countryside
For couples who love a quintessentially Welsh landscape — rolling green fields, drystone walls, country lanes, and that particular quality of soft Welsh light — the countryside around Cowbridge and the broader Vale of Glamorgan is hard to beat. There’s a timeless, unhurried quality to images made here, and the proximity to Bridgend makes it a very practical choice for many of the couples I work with.
8. Pontcanna Fields and Bute Park, Cardiff
If you’re a Cardiff couple and you want something accessible, relaxed, and beautiful in every season, Pontcanna Fields and Bute Park are excellent choices. The tree-lined avenues are spectacular in autumn, the open fields work beautifully in summer, and the whole area has a warmth and familiarity that helps couples relax quickly. It’s one of those locations that feels personal rather than performative — exactly what a good engagement shoot should feel like.
